Any man who has daughters will understand. The father will look with deep suspicion upon any fellow who is brought home and introduced as ‘The Boyfriend’ (TB). Whoever he is, he is probably not going to be good enough for my girl. His personal habits come under the severe spotlight of my very critical gaze. If he drinks at all, he is probably an alcoholic. If he doesn’t drink there must be a deep-seated reason. He must have issues. If he shows an interest in cooking, he is probably just trying to make a good impression. If he doesn’t, there is little hope for the boy.
The Wife has her own list of concerns based around maternal issues that no man can understand and I am not going to go into these here.
So, when my eldest brought TB home, he had a bit of work to do. I admit that we have grown to tolerate him around the place. We even spent a couple of weeks on holidays with him last summer. By late last year, we would have had him in the category of ‘acceptable material’. He cooks a mean Cow Pie and his interest in the culinary arts goes way beyond trying to impress either the Wife or myself.
He has now been elevated to the highest status any BF can enjoy. Why? Because he brought us a Christmas gift of a bottle of Highbank Orchard Syrup. This tiny bottle contains the most magnificent organic apple concentrate. We were having an apple pie the other evening and I made pastry sticks from some leftovers. We had these dipped in the syrup as an in-between course. The Highbank Orchard Syrup is not widely available. But, it really is wonderful. Like I’ve said all along, he is not a bad lad really….
